2006: I haven't written anything on this site in 4 years and so much has happened! Welcome to my personal web site...Here's my story... I have been a net grrrl for the past 11 years, but for the first 6 years my favorite net activity was group internet videoconferencing. This old site was all about the history of that. I owned and managed the famous ClubOz ref and web from 1996. The reflector had 20,000 global members at its height, 2 years before Ozemail ISp was founded.

Since 1996 I have worked with convergent media content, videoconferencing management systems and wireless networks. I founded and managed WITC 2002 Award winning Videcom Services, which was born out of ClubOZ IP ~ a product of Powerlan Limited. Since 2002 I have worked in mobile telcommunications innovation with Vodafone& Optus Singtel. Today I'm General Manager of Products & Services for iBurst. iBurst is a mobile wireless broadband network owned and operated by Personal Broadband Australia. Videoconferencing Tips.

March 2002: If you are at this site, there's a good chance you've met me on the internet or on CUSeeMe some time between 1996 and 2002. If you don't know what CUSeeMe is, you're missing out on loads of fun. CUSeeMe is really cool software that lets you see, hear, text chat and share emoticons with many users simultaneously. That means you can watch as many videos simultaneously as your bandwidth will allow.
Those of us who've been around since ICQ first started, back in the days when Netscape ruled, long before AOL, and even Real Player. We met on group video reflector sites and formed clubs. We did CU parties, CU raves, fallen n love on CU, been adicted to CU and some of us even traveled the world to meet for REAL PARTIES, RAVES and Romance. Some of our Cu friends from opposite continents are now happily married.

Video Conferencing Survey

To send the best quality video, you need the best quality hardware/software.

I use a Winnov Videum ProPack camera with a Winnov ISA capture card. I use Winnov Videum 2.7.2, available here.

Most newbies buy a quickcam and plug it into either their USB port, or into a parallel port. These are ok, but nowhere near real movie quality. Some people are happy with this, cos it suits them

Quality will deteriorate if you have any /all of the following:

  • A slow computer, a slow phoneline, or a slow ISP.
  • Do yourself a favour with Processor Speed....at least own a Pentium II, but preferably a Pentium III or IV.

  • Make sure your phoneline connects at a minimum of 31000 BPS.
  • Make sure you haveminimum 56K net access. The best results are achieved with broadband commencing at 128KBPS. There is no need to have an upload speed of more than 384kbps, but remember the more data you can download, the more videos you can open.
  • Eliminate as many games as possible from your computer ( keep them on CD).
  • Keep your computer clean. Clean out all your temp files regularly.
  • Don't run other programs at the same time as Myvidecom. (or you may crash)
  • Don't download at the same time (Video requires a lot of bandwidth).
  • Think about this logically, the more videos you open, the more data you are downloading, the slower you will send and receive. Be smart, don't open too many videos so you won't slow to a snailpace.

Configuring Your Browser to Launch CU-SeeMe

If you use Videcorp, you can configure your web browser installed on your computer to launch CU-SeeMe V3, CUSeeMe Pro, or CUSeeMe for Mac when it encounters a .cu or .csm file linked from a web page. ( You can also use Netmeeting or any H323 high-end software - the bonus is you get to see 4 videos instead of 1!)

There are many versions of web browsers available for use and it is beyond the scope of this FAQ to explain how to configure every web browser. Consult the documentation or online Help for your web browser to learn how to configure your browser.

As a general guideline, follow these steps:

  1. Locate the dialog box to add new file types in your browser, typically in a preferences dialog box. For example:
  • Netscape Navigator 3.0 - Choose General Preferences from the Options menu, then select Helpers. Now click on Create New Type.
  • Netscape Navigator 4.0 - Choose Preferences from the Edit menu, then Navigator (under Category), then select Applications.
  • Internet Explorer 3.0 - Choose Options from the View menu, then the Programs tab, then File Types, and finally New Type.
  1. Specify the mime type (if applicable): application
  2. Specify the mime subtype (if applicable): x-cu-seeme
  3. Specify the file extension or suffix: .cu .csm
  4. Specify CU-SeeMe as the application. You can use the Browse or Choose option to search for the CU-SeeMe program.

Make sure CU-SeeMe is in your path, or specify the full path name of the cuseeme executable.

Set the action to launch the application.

Net Etiquette means :

When you are in a public conference, treat others as you would like to be treated - with respect. You can do whatever you like in your own private conferences - inlcuding acting like a jerk.

Don't geek (private chat) people uninvited. If you want to meet someone do it publicly.

Don't harass people with sexual innuendo or rudeness.

If someone doesn't speak back to you assume they are busy or not interested.

IIf you cannot resist, at least nuke them creatively.
