Reconcilliation of intellectual property rights with the concept of open innovation has been an ongoing area of concern for firms pursuing new product and service development in networked environments. A recent working paper by University of London’s Birgitte Andersen explores the issues as they pertain to the ICT based services industry. Abstract Quote: “IPR legislation in its current form is providing very exclusive broad rights for a long period. Using an example of computer implemented inventions and innovations, the paper demonstrates how ‘open innovation’ processes in services can successfully be underpinned by the IPR system using both proprietary strategies and non-proprietary IPR methodologies regarding appropriate and less exclusive IPR protection and associated innovation management.” Download the full paper here.
